And I Just Can’t Contain This Feelin’ That Remains

I was reading through Ace of Spades most recent post, and came to an epiphany:

Solomon was an addict.

Every woman he added to his harem was yet another attempt to chase the dragon.

And every temple he built to a foreign god was a payment made to his dealer.

All to ensure he always had his fix.

Like many an addict, his addiction eventually led to the point where it brought to ruin everything he had built up in his life.

In his desire to take the edge off, he ensured that the pain only increased.

And that is because no drug, whether the kind ingested, injected, smoked… or welcomed into ones arms, can ever fix the pain.

It can only numb it.

There is only one cure to the pain.

And that is Death.

God designed the game. There’s only one exit.

You had me going for a while. It is good that you are not wrestling with my demons. If you were, I would offer the consolation that it is because you care.

You’re right … Solomon was an addict. And his addiction meant there were a thousand heathen men in the lands around him who had no means of sating their own. He defiled Israel by making it more and more like the heathen.

He obviously made little time for training up the next generation.

He made silver (money) as common as stones in the streets of Jerusalem. That’s inflation. And taxes became ridiculous.

I’m guessing there must have been a Baby Boom after David united the twelve Tribes. Just … saying.

  4. I fixed the link to Ace’s post, which was not showing up in the original post.

    Solomon was an addict.

    I’m using that.

The wisest man of his time as an object lesson for foolishness.

@Lost Patrol, there’s a certain poetry in that.

And you even wrote it in the style Ace of Spades would.

    Well done.

  8. @ Fuzzie,

Well, I have demons of my own. We all struggle with demons, whether we realize it or not.

  9. @ JD

Yes, his earthly wisdom was spent foolishly, and gained him nothing in the end. I imagine he was quite the burnout at the end of his life. No wonder his son turned out to be such a dolt.

Well done and I’m honored, Donal.

    Thank you.

Side note: Though I listened to yours as I read, this is the song I thought of once finished-

  11. Oh, I forgot to mention: the link still does not work for me. Is that true for others?

    Solomon was an addict.

Each of the countless women added to his harem was another sprint toward the ever elusive dragon.

Every temple he built to a foreign god was payment made to his dealer.

All to ensure he never went without a fix.

Like every other junkie, his addiction led him to the point where it brought to ruin everything he had built in his extraordinary life.

In his desire to take the edge off, he only ensured more pain was stacked onto himself.

Because no drug – ingested, injected, smoked or snorted – can ever fix the pain.

    They can only numb it.

Since pain, after all, has but one cure:

    Death.

  13. Ace, thanks for the kind words. I checked, and yes, the link was bad. Been having trouble with wordpress lately, so hopefully it is fixed now.

I get why you thought those songs worked. I chose mine because I wanted to focus on the addict part, not the death/love part. After all, There She Goes is all about heroin. And that is the killer drug.

  15. I’d no idea. Excellent choice. That drug is such a killer, even Lemmy from Motörhead – even with all of his substance abuse issues – loathed it:

“I hate heroin. It killed off a lot of my generation. It killed off a lot of my friends. Now this generation is getting killed off again. I can’t believe it. How many dead bodies do we need to have piled up?”

“Lemmy summarized his longstanding hatred of heroin as such: “It’s the only [drug] I ever saw kill people…It’s too easy to fuck up…It makes you into a dog, and then it kills you. It makes you into a thief and a whore.”

    Is an addiction
